Australian Climate

a variety from hot in the north to cold snow in the south

Australian ClimateAustralia's Climate is a variety from hot and tropical in the north to cold snow in the south and hot dry parched deserts with cold nights in the central 'outback'.

The map below gives an approximate regional weather pattern but there are more conditions to take into consideration when planting in a garden or looking for wildflowers.

Coastal areas are affected by prevailing winds and the proximity of hills or mountains as well as water sources all play a part in what grows best in a certain area.

Even the type of soil can make a difference from clay to sandy as to how plants roots deal with and sustain the plant.

And as Australia is a very large continent there are some species of plants and flowers that will grow in sometime only small areas due to the precise environment. Even Banksias, tough as they can be, vary from region to region based on soil, nearness to the coast and rainfall.

Frosts also play a part in what to plant in a garden and these vary greatly even within a few kilometers of each other as valleys, other vegetation and waterways all affect how much frost an area will get and at what time of year.

So a little research may be needed when choosing plants for a garden and even within a garden you will find shade from trees, walls and buildings can be utilized or avoided according to each variety of flora.
